This 60-minute presentation will visit the newer class of agents: The Incretin based therapies. The talk will explore the difference in effects of the 2 classes of medications within this newer class of treatments; the DPP-IV inhibitors and the GLP-1 Agonists.
The discussion around incretin therapy will include exploring ways to support including medication use into the patients overall lifestyle management of their diabetes. Included throughout the presentation will be details of the Canadian Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines especially as they pertain to Medication management. Rob will bring his expertise as part of the expert or writing committee of the Guidelines to the presentation, by providing some of the new and updated recommendations that are pending from the new Diabetes Guidelines to be released next month.
I addition Rob will discuss the new emphasis on individualizing therapy goals and treatments, by visiting the various criteria in determining these objectives. Visiting the evidence of the benefit of early and aggressive therapy and its positive effect on outcomes will be addressed.
Also on the presentation agenda is the discussion of ways to support patients in overcoming the injection barrier to achieve effective management of type 2 diabetes. Rob, as a founding board member and co-author of the FIT (Fundamentals of Injection Techniques) Canada will be available to answer questions on proper injection procedures and troubleshooting injection problems
The presentation will include throughout a number of case studies to help translate theory to daily practical pharmacy practice. Time permitting there are “presentation snippets” from some of Rob’s colleagues including Dr. Alice Cheng and Lori Berard, that can add perspectives from collaborating professions to each of the cases to provide a “global” picture of how each scenario could be dealt with.
The conclusion will have a short quiz of pertinent questions for discussion around the main topics presented, as well as time allotted for questions and answers.
